We do as much as we can to be environmentally friendly. We are so lucky to have found a beautiful area of Sri Lanka. Although we are foreigners and still young only in spirit, we feel its vital to leave something for the future generations of Sri Lanka and to stop destruction of the land by unsustainable practices as we have seen far too often in other parts of the world. Global climate change affects us all, so we want to do our best to help this breathtaking area in the Sri Lankan mountains.
I really admire your strong resolve to do what is best for the environment and the people of Sri Lanka who the land belongs to.” (D.A., Brooklyn, New York March 2020)
There is a stream with a small waterfall on our Upper Division. In the rainy season the water flow can be very powerful, but in the dry season it reduces to a mere trickle. We try to ensure that plenty of plants are established surrounding the stream so it doesn’t dry up completely.
We also have gravity fed ponds from mountain streams to keep the land from drying out and to attract a diversity of birds and dragonflies. At the lowest point, the water goes back into the ground.
No cultivation of any plot larger than 1 acre is allowed on our land. We are purposely letting large areas go “Back to Nature” to encourage local flora and fauna.
You could ensure protection for a young plant for a year, maybe on behalf of a child who would be sent photos of the progress. We would hold a short “Pooja” in our little Hindu kovil (temple) to bless the plant and you, then you could help to plant it in the ground or in a nursery.
